Born in Limoges, Pierre-Victurnien Vergniaud served as an adviser to the Parlement of bordeaux, then as administrator of the Gironde and, during the revolution of 1789, was one of the most remarkable leaders and speakers of the Girondins in the Legislative Assembly. There, he took a position against the refractory clergy and the émigrés. President of the Convention (January 1793), he voted for the death of the king without reprieve. He tried to oppose the first public safety measures proposed by the montagnards (creation of the Revolutionary Tribunal, March 1793) and was himself sentenced and condemned with the principal girondin leaders after the populist riots of May 31-June 2, 1793.
